What do I need to think about before building my home?
There are many factors to consider when preparing to build your new home. Of course you will need to pick an area to live and, if necessary, acquire the lot or land where you want to build. From there you will need to put a lot of thought into your budget. Your budget will be the single most important factor in guiding your decisions throughout the building process. Your construction budget will help you in prioritizing where your dollars go, as options will present you with many opportunities to save or splurge.
It is important that you and your builder are clear on your budget and what items are fixed and which items are regarded as "allowances" (items which start with a fixed budget that can be changed at an additional charge).
Can you tell me in advance cost per square foot?
While a spec home may be built by a builder and sold turnkey with a definable price per square foot, building a custom home is quite different. There are many factors to consider including the terrain of the home site, the size of the home you want to build, whether it is one story or two, and the type and quality of interior and exterior items. Additionally, when cost per square foot is considered, it does not factor in things like patios, porches, garages or balconies. It is best to sit down with your builder and discuss in detail what you would like to see in your new home and build your budget around that.
I want to build green. Can you do that?
The majority of homes we build are considered green homes, and are Energy Star Certified Homes (meaning they are designed and built to standards that will save you up to 30% on energy costs compared to non-green homes). Williams-Hirsch Custom Builders has received many awards and accolades as a green builder. Please visit the Awards and Distinctions page to see a comprehensive list.
